The premier of Madonna’s film W.E about the American socialite has seen the enigma that is Wallis Simpson creep back onto the fashion agenda, and quite rightly so! Often described as ‘not the best looking, but often the best dressed’, there is little surprise that the world has fallen for the controversial figure’s style all over again. Her sharp, crisp well thought out style reflected that of the decadent 1930s which saw the world change dramatically from the once golden era, to the constant perils of World War II. Wallis’ often demonstrated rather ironically a glamorous form of austerity, from her high neck lines and side splits to her long hemlines and cap sleeved dresses.

Interesting Fact: The main reason Wallis Simpson became a great figure of controversy was because of her marital status as a twice married divorcee, while she was involved with then ruling King Edward VIII. As divorcees were not allowed to join the court, and threatened to cause a national constitutional crisis. This led to Edward giving up his throne to marry her and instead take the title, the Duke of Windsor to which when the couple were married, they became the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
